Update 114-01
Update 114-01
Event Videography
21st December 2006
12:30 AM

Its holidays for me now so I decided to make myself useful and go into event videography in order to make some money - Rather, offset the cost of my new camera. For those of you that don't know, I got a buffed-up version of David's Camera, the Canon XL2.

Took that picture without the mic but you can imagine what it does with it on. Anyway, the lens seems rather out of place but its supposedly better. Its a completely manual, 16x zoom which can apparently simulate film-like depth of field: In English, that means that it can focus on the subject but blur the background. So yeah, pretty cool; especially for Camera Geeks who can appreciate it... Like this guy or this girl. Unlike David, I paid US$2,000 (SGD$3,000) versuses the 6,000 he paid for the whole package. I also got Malcolm's Manfrotto/Bogen tripod which he paid $700 but I got for $200. Hehe. Eat that you rich kids.

Los Angeles is a great market place for extremely good used video camera equipment. If you look around enough, you can get professional-grade stuff for a quarter of the price they cost new.

Anyhow, I spent my weekend filming this Korean guy's 80th birthday party at some posh retirement home in San Diego that seemed more like a resort than anything. This guy is pretty cool - Not only is his influence pretty widespread in the Law circile, but he was also one of the first Asians to go to Yale Law School. I got US$400 for the four hour event. That seems like a lot... If you don't have a $2000 debt to clear with loan sharks parents.

As you can see, if you excuse the stupid pixelated compressor I used to extract the stills, the depth-of-field capabilities of the camera are pretty awesome. Okay its getting late now. I actually have alot more interesting screen grabs but I should quit posting so many pictures before I get sued over invasion of privacy or something (The guy's a lawyer, after all)... And it's America... So you never know...
